Międzynarodowego Kongresu Studiów Nubiologicznych, który odbył się w 2006 roku w Warszawie (www.nubia2006.uw.edu.pl). Pierwszy tom pod tym samym tytułem ukazał się w 2008 roku i zawiera referaty wygłoszone przez 17 czołowych badaczy na sesjach głównych. Drugi tom akt odzwierciedla bogactwo epok i tematów poruszanych podczas kongresu, od paleolitu po sułtanat Fundż i od prehistorii poprzez cywilizacje Kerma, Napata i Meroe do post-meroickich pozostałości i chrześcijańskich królestw. Obszerny dział obejmuje prezentacje wyników bieżących badań terenowych, które stanowią bezcenny bodziec dla dalszych studiów syntetycznych. Pozycja rozpoczyna się kilkoma artykułami o ogólnym znaczeniu, kończy się natomiast zapisem przebiegu dwóch warsztatów gromadzących znawców w jednym wypadku starożytnych języków, a w drugim ikonografii królewskiej w obrębie doliny Środkowego Nilu. W sumie zaprezentowano 80 artykułów wyposażonych w obszerne bibliografie. Metodologicznie, artykuły obejmują obszerne sprawozdania z bieżących wykopalisk (w tym kilkanaście wystąpień dotyczących badań ratunkowych w rejonie Czwartej Katarakty w Sudanie), studia źródłowe oraz przenikliwe analizy na temat architektury, sztuki i społeczeństwa starożytnej Nubii. W całości akta kongresu Between the Cataracts ilustrują nie tylko topograficzny zasięg studiów nubiologicznych na dzień dzisiejszy, ale także bogactwo i błyskawiczny rozwój tej dyscypliny naukowej w ostatnim półwieczu. Miłym polskim akcentem jest to, że jednym z założycieli tej dyscypliny był prof. Kazimierz Michałowski i to z jego inicjatywy pierwszy kongres nubiologów odbył się w Warszawie w 1972 roku. ********* Between the Cataracts, Part Two: Session Papers (fasc. 1-2) completes the publication of the proceedings of the 11th Conference of Nubian Studies that was held at the University of Warsaw in 2006. It follows in the wake of the first volume of the proceedings which included the main papers read at the conference. The Session Papers reflect the richness of periods and topics that were discussed: from the Paleolithic to the Fung Sultanate of Sennar and from Prehistory through the Kerma, Napata and Meroe civilizations and the post-Meroe and Christian kingdoms. An extensive section is devoted to current fieldwork, the results of which are sure to fuel new studies. The volume opens with a section of general-interest papers and closes with the content of two workshops bringing together specialist on the languages in one case and the royal iconography on the other in the Middle Nile Valley. Altogether the second part brings 80 articles. The papers cover diverse aspects of research from descriptive reports on recent fieldwork (with a sizable section focusing on the Fourth Cataract salvage effort), through documentary studies and insightful analyses of Nubian society, architecture and art. In their entirety, Between the Cataracts not only illustrate the topographical scope of Nubian studies, but also the richness and rapid development of this scholarly discipline.
